You set the pad right on top of your shoulder, walk fifty steps, and look down. The pad has crept round behind you, the thin webbing is cutting into your collarbone, and the camera is bumping somewhere near your back pocket. You pull it straight. Fifty steps later it has done it again.
This is the most common complaint about a camera sling strap, and it is not bad luck or a faulty strap. A sling is a loop of webbing hanging on a curved, moving surface with a heavy weight at one end. Left alone, that loop settles wherever gravity and friction put it, and that is rarely where you put the pad. The good news is that every cause is mechanical, which means every one has a mechanical fix.
Why a camera sling strap rotates in the first place
The pad moves because the weight is always trying to reach the lowest point it can, and the strap is free to slide to let it. Your shoulder is not a flat hook. It slopes down and away from your neck, and it rolls forward and back with every stride. Each step gives the camera a small swing, each swing tugs the webbing a fraction of an inch, and a few hundred steps add up to a pad that has travelled right round.
Owners describe it the same way. In one public review of a well-known sliding sling, a photographer wrote that "within minutes of walking it rotates to the thin strap and the padded strap moves to the bottom." That is the whole problem in one sentence, and it happens with plenty of slings, not one brand.
Once you know it is physics, the question becomes which of the forces is winning on your body. There are usually five suspects.
1. You are wearing it over one shoulder, not across your body
A strap hung on one shoulder has nothing holding it there except friction. Turn your torso, lean in to shoot, or shrug a backpack on, and it slides down the slope of the shoulder. Worn crossbody, over your head with the pad on one shoulder and the camera at the opposite hip, the loop wraps round your chest and cannot fall off. It can still rotate, but far less.
2. The strap is too long
A camera hanging at mid-thigh swings like a pendulum, and a longer pendulum swings harder. Every stride yanks the webbing, and the pad follows the webbing. When the camera sits snug at your hip, it moves with your body instead of against it, and most of the tugging stops.
3. The camera slides along the webbing
On many slings the camera rides on a connector that runs freely along the strap. That is the point of the design: you pull the camera up to your eye without taking anything off. It also means the camera is always free to travel to the lowest spot, dragging webbing with it. If the weight ends up behind your hip, it pulls the pad backward over your shoulder. If it ends up in front, the pad slides toward your neck.
4. Your clothes are too slippery
A pad on a cotton T-shirt grips. The same pad on a nylon rain shell or a puffer jacket slides as if it were oiled. Plenty of people only notice the problem in autumn, which is a clue worth checking before blaming the strap.
5. Something else is fighting for the same shoulder
A backpack strap, a bag strap or a second camera sitting on the same shoulder pushes the pad sideways every time it moves. Two straps on one shoulder rarely share it peacefully.
How to stop the strap rotating
Work through these in order. Most people are fixed by the first two, and none of them costs anything.
Wear it crossbody and set the length on your body
Put the strap over your head, pad on the shoulder opposite the camera. Then shorten it until the camera rests at your hip bone with your arm relaxed. Do this wearing what you will actually shoot in. A length that is right over a T-shirt is too tight over a winter coat, and a length set over a coat hangs too low in summer, which puts you straight back to suspect number two.
Put the pad slightly toward your neck
Instead of centring the pad on the point of your shoulder, where the slope is steepest, set it an inch or two in toward your neck, on the flatter part of the trapezius muscle. The pad has further to travel before it drops off the edge, and the flatter surface resists rolling.
Park the camera where it pulls the pad into place
If your sling lets the camera slide, settle it at your hip before you start walking, not behind it, and check its manual for a way to limit how far it travels. Some photographers also turn the lens to face in toward the leg. The camera then hangs flatter against the body, swings less and snags less in a crowd.
Add or use an underarm stabilizer
Several slings sold on Amazon include a thin strap that runs from the pad under your arm and clips back to the main strap. It turns the pad into a loop that goes round your shoulder instead of sitting on it, and it is the most direct fix there is. If your sling has one and it is sitting in the box, try it for a day.
Choose which shoulder carries the bag
When you wear a backpack, put the sling on first and the backpack over the top, so the backpack strap presses the pad down rather than shoving it aside. With a messenger bag, wear the bag across the opposite shoulder, so the two straps cross on your chest instead of stacking on one side.
Rest a hand on the camera when you walk far
This sounds too simple, but a hand resting lightly on the camera stops the swing that starts the whole cycle. It also keeps the lens off door frames.
Check the connection while you are at it
There is a second kind of rotation that is not about comfort. Slings that attach through the tripod socket rely on a screw, and a camera turning on its mount can slowly loosen it. Every few outings, and before any hike, twist the camera by hand and make sure the screw is tight. If your strap has a safety tether, clip it to the camera's strap eyelet. It is a second connection that costs nothing and only matters on the one day the first one lets go.
What a strap that stays put looks like
The photograph above is from one of our own shoots, and it shows the geometry every fix in this article is aiming for. The pad sits on top of the shoulder, the strap crosses the back in a straight diagonal, and the camera hangs lens down at the opposite hip, close enough to the body that it moves with him rather than against him. Nothing is pulling the pad anywhere.
Length is what makes that geometry possible, and it is where many slings fall short for bigger builds. A strap that barely reaches across a broad chest ends up worn over one shoulder, which is suspect number one. The HiiGuy camera strap comes as two variations that are identical except for length. The five-minute test
Before you buy anything, try this at home. Put the strap on crossbody over the clothes you shoot in. Set the length so the camera sits at your hip. Move the pad an inch toward your neck. Then walk around the block at a normal pace without touching the camera.
If the pad is still on your shoulder when you get back, the strap was never the problem. It was the way it was worn. If it has rotated anyway, look at what is left: slippery clothing, a camera sliding behind you, or a second strap on the same shoulder. One of those is almost always the culprit, and now you know how to fix each of them.
