This page covers how HiiGuy makes money, how gear gets listed here, and where our judgement can be trusted and where you should discount it. It is written to be read, not to satisfy a lawyer.
What HiiGuy actually is
HiiGuy is not a magazine and has no editorial staff. It is a small brand that has made one product since 2016: a padded camera strap, in a 32-inch and a 44-inch length. The long one exists because almost nobody else makes one, and it is the reason most people find us.
Everything else on this site — bags, tripods, microphones, other people's straps — is gear we point you to on Amazon. We do not stock it, ship it or warranty it.
The conflict you should know about first
We sell a camera strap. So take our opinion on camera straps with that in mind.
Most sites that recommend gear do not compete with the gear they recommend. We do. When we write about straps, we are describing a category we are in. We try to be straight about what our strap is bad at — it is not a fast-access sling system, it has no anchor-link ecosystem, and if you want a leather strap for a rangefinder, buy a leather strap for a rangefinder.
You should read our strap coverage more sceptically than our bag coverage. That is the honest instruction, and we would rather give it than pretend the conflict is not there.
The two kinds of links on this site
Our own product
The HiiGuy Camera Strap is ours. We designed it, we manufacture it, and we sell it on Amazon. When you buy it we make the product margin, the same as any brand selling its own goods. There is no commission and no third party.
Everything else
HiiGuy is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program. When you buy another brand's product through a link here, Amazon pays us a small commission.
It costs you nothing. You pay Amazon's price. The commission comes out of Amazon's margin, not yours, and you are never charged more for arriving through us.
Every affiliate link is labelled next to the button, before you click, and carries the technical markers search engines use to identify paid links. If a link is not labelled, it is our own product.
How something gets listed here
We will not overstate this. We have not physically tested most of the gear we link to. What we do is read the listing properly, read the critical reviews rather than the five-star ones, check the specification against what the product claims, and check that the seller has a history.
That is research, not a review, and we say so on the page. When we have actually used something, we say that too — and it is rare enough to be worth saying.
What we will not do
- We do not take payment for a placement. No brand has ever paid to appear on this site, and if one offers, that is the end of the conversation with that brand.
- We do not list gear we would tell a friend to avoid because the commission is good. A higher rate is not a reason.
- We do not write about products we have not researched. If we cannot say something useful, the product does not go up.
- We do not run sponsored posts. If that ever changes, it will be labelled at the top of the page, not in a footnote.
- We do not quietly drop the disclosure on pages that convert better without it.
Prices and availability
Amazon changes prices, stock and specifications constantly, and anything quoted here can be wrong by the time you read it. The price on Amazon when you buy is the price. Check the listing.
Buying, returns and warranty
Purchases happen on Amazon, not here. Orders, tracking, returns and refunds live in your Amazon account, and Amazon can act on them the same day. We cannot.
The three-year HiiGuy warranty covers the HiiGuy strap only and is handled by us. Other brands carry their own manufacturer's warranty, and we have no part in it.
Your data
If you give us your email for the free ebook, we use it to send you the ebook and, later, occasional email from HiiGuy. We do not sell it and we do not pass it to the brands we link to. Every email has an unsubscribe link that works.
Tell us when we get it wrong
If something here is inaccurate, out of date, or reads like a sales pitch dressed as advice, write to us through the contact page. A person reads every message, and corrections go on the page rather than quietly into the archive.
