The Rebel T100 — the EOS 4000D outside North America — is the cheapest route Canon offers into an optical viewfinder and interchangeable lenses. Eighteen megapixels, nine focus points, and full manual control.
It is the most basic body we cover, and the most honest about it. That is not a criticism: for someone learning, a camera cheap enough to take everywhere beats a better one left at home.

A real optical viewfinder. At this price most alternatives give you a rear screen only. Composing through the lens is a different way of seeing.

Full manual control is the reason to buy this body rather than use a phone. Start from that triangle in good light and change one thing at a time until the relationship between the three is obvious.

Eighteen megapixels prints perfectly well at normal sizes. In good light the gap between this and a camera five times the price is far smaller than the price gap suggests.

The same nine-point array as the Rebel T7. Focus with the centre point and recompose. A 50mm f/1.8 on this body produces portraits that look nothing like its price.

Native ISO stops at 6,400 with an expanded 12,800 setting above it. Indoors, more light beats a higher number every time — move toward a window rather than reaching for ISO.

At 436 g this is among the lightest bodies you can buy with a real viewfinder, which is exactly why it gets carried rather than left at home.
